Football in Gujranwala
The City of Wrestlers is developing its football identity.
The Football Scene in Gujranwala
Gujranwala is known as Pakistan's “City of Wrestlers,” and its combat sports culture is deep and celebrated. But in the gaps between wrestling and cricket, a football scene has been building for years. Pakistan's fourth-largest city, sitting between Lahore and Sialkot in the industrial heartland of Punjab, has the population density and sporting instinct to develop a serious football ecosystem.
The growth of private futsal courts over the past five years has been the primary driver of football expansion in Gujranwala. University of Gujranwala and Government College host campus competitions. Regional tournaments connect the city's clubs to the Lahore and Sialkot ecosystems. The football culture here is younger and less historically defined than in the major cities, which means it is also more open, more willing to build records from scratch, and more conscious that the first clubs to document their history will be the clubs that define Gujranwala football for the next generation.
