Football in Quetta
Pakistan's most passionate football city has been its most invisible.
The Football Scene in Quetta
Quetta has a football culture that would surprise anyone who has not seen it. The capital of Balochistan (Pakistan's largest province, the most underdeveloped in terms of sports infrastructure) produces football with intensity and passion that few cities in the country can match. The Hazara community in Hazara Town, the Pashtun communities in the old city, and the cantonment each have their own football world, distinct and serious.
Playing conditions in Quetta are unlike anywhere else in Pakistan: the city sits at 1,680 metres above sea level, its winters are genuinely cold, and the physical terrain around it is rugged. Players here are physically tough by necessity. What they have historically lacked is organisation: tournaments that run properly, records that persist, a platform that connects their football to the national ecosystem. That gap is exactly what structured registration is beginning to close.
