Football in Peshawar

Peshawar is not a city people associate with football, but they should. The provincial capital of KPK has been home to organised football since the colonial period. The Peshawar cantonment hosted some of the earliest structured games in the region. The Arbab Niaz Stadium sits near the heart of the city, a reminder that football infrastructure existed here before most other Pakistani cities had formal grounds.

The football culture in Peshawar is shaped by the city's unique position: a gateway city with deep Pashtun sporting traditions, a large cantonment with its own sporting infrastructure, and a university population that generates consistent tournament activity. KPK has historically invested more in football relative to its size than other provinces.
